Who we are

Our Story

I am Susan Shouse, owner and operator of New Dawn Equine Ranch. I live on 20 amazing acres nestled at the end of Diamond Lake, with my daughter, Kalah.  Our passion as been to create this therapy ranch to help others who may be experiencing, or have experienced, life challenges similar to ours.  On this page I will give a brief history, if you would like to learn more please contact us.

Susan

I am a middle aged widow that spent the majority of my adult life working in healthcare.  I met my late husband at the level 1 trauma center I was working at. He was a paramedic firefighter, we were married for 20 years.  In 2016 we lost him after an in the line of duty accident.  He managed to survive his initial trauma but was left with a severe TBI, in a wheelchair, needing constant care.  He made the decision to end his suffering. While we have been traumatized by his loss, we have come to understand and accept this journey. We are beyond proud of the man who spent his life sacrificing for and saving others, even in the end.  It was in the midst of this trauma that we dove head first into horses.   Having an outlet for grief, anger, sadness, pain is what helps us on the daily.  So, my daughter actually planted the idea of creating a place where people who have experienced traumatic loss could come and heal with horses. In 2021, we sold our home in Post Falls and moved to rural Diamond Lake Washington to put the plan in motion.  We have done all of the work ourselves and have given our all to this labor of love.  Along with my medical degrees (with extensive experience in trauma and orthopedics), I am certified in Equine Therapeutics, including Equine Therapeutic Riding Instructor. I am currently working towards PATH certification.  I AM NOT A MENTAL HEALTH PROVIDER.  We work closely with licensed mental health and physical therapists. I am cultivating those relationships to provide the best service we can. I am, however, a faith over fear, highly qualified counselor and coach. I have established a program to help explore some core life building techniques to empower and strengthen ourselves. I am a real, broken, faith filled woman who has the passion to help others. Lets talk about how I can help you!

Kalah

My fearless, strong daughter.  She is full of grace and grit. She can make a 1200 lb animal mind but is sensitive to other's (both human and animal) emotions and needs.  She has a unique gift in calming animals, especially horses.  She helps in every aspect of this project and has a deep desire to help others connect and heal with horses.  Kalah is homeschooled but is on the local high school equestrian team. She is passionate and full of spirit. She is a force that will change this world for the better, one person and animal at a time. She will be pursuing her education and career in Equine Studies and maybe Vet school as soon as she graduates high school.
